What Creakwise does
Creakwise lives in your menu bar. It reads your MacBook's lid angle and plays sounds that follow how you move the lid. Pick one of six packs: Soft Click, Creak, Ratchet, Wooden Box, Magnet Latch or Servo. An optional screen effect darkens the built-in display as the lid nears closed. Use Simulate a fold in the app to hear a pack without moving the lid.
Supported Macs
Requires a MacBook with a built-in lid angle sensor and macOS 26 or later. Tested on MacBook Air (M4) with macOS 27. Reported to work on 14- and 16-inch MacBook Pro (2021 and later, M1 Pro/Max onward) and MacBook Air (M4, M5); MacBook Air (M2, M3) has the sensor but few user reports. Not supported: MacBook Air (M1), 13-inch MacBook Pro (M1, M2), and Intel MacBooks. Compatibility is not guaranteed. Creakwise checks your Mac when it launches and tells you if it cannot run. The angle is approximate.
On a Mac without the sensor, you can still try the sounds with Simulate a fold.
Questions
I can't hear any sound
Check that sound is switched on in the Creakwise menu and that the app is not paused. Raise the Creakwise volume and your Mac's output volume, and check the selected output device. Try Simulate a fold: if you hear it, the sound works and the issue is the lid angle reading. Sounds follow lid movement, so you will hear nothing while the lid is still.
"Lid angle sensor not found"
Your Mac does not report a lid angle. Creakwise needs a MacBook with a built-in lid angle sensor. If your Mac should have one, quit and reopen Creakwise. If it still isn't found, your model is probably not supported.
"Can't read the lid angle right now"
The sensor exists but could not be read just now. This is usually temporary. Quit and reopen Creakwise; if it keeps happening, email us with your Mac model.
How do I pause it?
Open the Creakwise menu bar icon and pause from there. You can also turn on the optional pause shortcut in Settings (Control-Option-Command-P). The icon changes while paused. If you hid Quick actions, use the shortcut or show the group again in Settings.
What does "Use Minimal" do?
In Settings › General, Use Minimal keeps only the Sound group in the menu that opens from the menu bar icon and folds the other Settings cards. Your sound, screen effect and pause settings are unchanged, and you can tick the groups back on under Show in menu.
What happens with an external display or a closed lid?
The screen effect appears on the built-in display only. Whether your Mac sleeps when you close the lid is decided by macOS, not by Creakwise.
How do I uninstall it?
Quit Creakwise from its menu, turn off Open at login in Settings if you enabled it, then move Creakwise to the Trash from your Applications folder. The app stores only a few local preferences and nothing else.
